RIPPLES OF HAPPINESS: A NEW SPACE AT HA LONG

A space inspired by the water’s ripples, built with the sea’s own materials.

HA LONG, VIETNAM – Pizza 4P’s has opened a newest restaurant in Ha Long, a city that sits on one of Vietnam’s most recognized natural landmarks: Ha Long Bay, a UNESCO World Heritage Site since 1994.

The new space, located at Ha Long Bay, was designed around a simple observation about the bay itself. Drop a stone into calm water and it doesn’t stay where it lands – it moves outward, circle by circle, further than the stone ever touched.

That motion is the same one behind our philosophy: happiness spreads the way a ripple does. A slice shared becomes a table full of smiles. A good afternoon here follows a guest home and, in its own way, becomes someone else’s good evening.

DESIGN ROOTED IN THE BAY

The interior draws directly from Ha Long’s coastline. Oyster shells, sourced from farms near the bay, are set into the concrete floors and the entrance wall, and wrapped around the restaurant’s oven. Tables carry pearl shell detailing worked into the surface.

The materials were chosen deliberately, as a way of returning something the sea has given the region for generations, rather than as decoration.

THE DESIGN PARTNER

NU Architecture & Design is an award-winning international design studio headquartered in Vietnam, working across Australia, the Middle East, Africa, and the United States.

The name NU, meaning “us” in Mauritian Creole, is a tribute to their co-founder’s mother tongue. Rather than imposing a signature aesthetic, the studio’s work is shaped by the identities, values, and lifestyles of its clients, allowing each project to express its own distinct narrative.

NU approaches architecture as a process of inquiry – where they are the design. Outcomes are shaped through dialogue, context, and careful observation rather than a predetermined style. The practice is guided by three core pillars: identity-based design, sustainability, and innovation. Sustainability is embedded through meaningful strategies, while innovation focuses on resolving complexity with restraint and rigour.

Developed through practice across diverse cultural and regulatory contexts, NU has established a disciplined design process. The studio works across architecture, interior, landscape, and product design, with work recognised through architectural publications and awards.

For Pizza 4P’s Ha Long, NU was entrusted with the architecture design – a project that called for the same quiet, listening approach the studio is known for. Rather than placing a bold statement against one of Vietnam’s most iconic landscapes, the team looked closely at Ha Long Bay itself: its light, its water, its limestone forms, and let the space take its cues from what was already there. The result is a space that doesn’t compete with the bay, but sits gently within it, giving guests a place to dine that feels like a natural extension of the view rather than an interruption of it. It’s a small, humble gesture in the face of such a grand setting – which is, in many ways, exactly the point.

A SITE WITH HISTORY

Ha Long Bay’s UNESCO status reflects centuries in which culture and nature in the region developed alongside each other. In designing the space, we aimed to build something that felt native to that history rather than added on top of it.

Pizza 4P’s Ha Long is now open to guests.
